Tawny Frogmouth Family

This beautiful family of Tawny Frogmouths lives in the vicinity of our block in Longford. First noticed the youngster during a horrible storm. The parents were protecting the little one from being blown out of the tree. Every day I tried to find the family’s whereabouts to make sure the youngster was still okay. Every day they made it hard for me to find them as they are masters of camouflage. The youngster would normally give away their position by not camouflaging her/himself (as a tree trunk), too curious and eager to see what I was doing. This particular day the family was posing for me and seemed relaxed about me taking photos. First time the three of them looked at me at the same time. Once I had this almost perfect shot I have left them alone. I still see them occasionally. They mate for life and will stay in the same area for a long time so I am looking forward to hopefully another offspring next year… A bit of trivia; the Tawny Frogmouth is actually not from the Owl family but related to the Nightjar family. The Tawny Frogmouth don’t have curved talons on their feet like Owls do. They are nocturnal and carnivores.
